Draft Day Memories: Bill Wennington.

Long before calling games for the Chicago Bulls Radio Network and before he won three championships for the same team he is employed to call games for, a young man named Bill Wennington was being hailed as Montreal’s finest basketball export.

After a standout college career at New York’s fabled St. John’s University, Bill went on to be picked sixteenth overall in the 1985 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. Which brings us to the photo of the Canadian big man you see below

I reached out to my friend Bill to find out the back story behind the image, “The photo was taken earlier in the day on Draft Day, just in front of the hotel near Madison Square Garden”. “We were going into Midtown to take pictures of me in my Team Canada sweats, thought we would be out and about for an hour or so. The fire truck was parked right out side, the fireman recognized me from St.John’s and agreed to take picture. We were done in less than 15 minutes lol”.

So there you have it, and now you also know Bill is fond of a lol.

The Bulls would have to wait eight more years while Bill made other stops around the league before acquiring his services, the title of the magazine proving prophetic not once, not twice, but three times.
